While working on your thesis, you should remember to take care of your data – it should be stored and backed up in a reliable way! Carrying your data around on an external drive without backup is not particularly responsible, nor is using a commercial cloud service.
Questions you need to think about in advance are:
-How much space do you require?
-Do you need to access your data on mobile devices?
-How can you share your data if you work with others, either from the same organization or outside?
The rule of thumb is that if your data is sensitive in any way, i.e. contains confidential or personal information, you need to be extra careful about how you store and share it.
Storage: ÅA's own servers (PCHome, PCInst, Localstorage), which are backed up every day. This means that the risk of losing data is very small. Security is also high.
Sharing: If you work together with someone else within ÅA, ÅA's PCInst server works. If you need to send individual files with sensitive information, use, for example, FUNET Filesender (log in with Haka-id and activate encryption).
Rubberstamp is a service that encrypts messages and documents. Log in with Haka-id.
If you have data/material in paper form, the same level of security applies. Personal data and other sensitive information in paper form must be kept behind a lock. For material that is not sensitive, you can make your own judgment, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
Here you'll find guides for how to connect to PCHome and PCInst. Storage space on Localstorage is only available when needed, please contact ICT.
You can see your quotas for data storage in SelfService.

Please note that commercial services used with personal accounts, such as Dropbox and Google Drive, are not recommended for storing and sharing research data. If such a service is compromised or data is lost, ÅA's ICT cannot help you.
