The first step when using the word processor extension to create references in a text is to check that Zotero is open in the background. Next, click on the Zotero tab and "Document preferences".
A menu opens where you can choose which reference style you want to use, as well as in which language. The most common reference styles are available ready-made in Zotero, and more can be downloaded from the Zotero Style Repository .
When creating references with Zotero, you can always go to "Document preferences" and change the reference style. This will automatically update your references according to the system and language you have selected.
When you want to enter references in the running text, place the cursor where you want to insert it and then select “Add/Edit Citation”. A red box will appear. In it you can enter the author's name or the title of the work you want to refer to, then select the correct reference.
To insert page numbers or the like, click on the reference in the box and in the new box that appears select the option you want (page, section, scene, column, and so on) and enter the information. If you want to insert other text in your citation, you can use prefixes and suffixes, the text you write there comes either before or after the citation.
If you want more than one source in your citation, you only need to press space after selecting the first source and start searching again. When you are ready, press enter to create the citation.
You can also click on the small arrow next to Z in the search box and select “Classic View” to access libraries to select a reference directly from there.Select "Multiple Sources" at the bottom, and then select the sources you want and transfer them to the box on the right with the green arrow.

You can also make two spaces in the box to bring up a list of all your references or click on the small arrow next to Z in the search box and select “Classic View” to access libraries to select a reference directly from there. If you use Classic View, you can select "Multiple Sources" at the bottom, and then select the sources you want and transfer them to the box on the right with the green arrow.
To add a reference list, place the cursor where you want the list to appear. Select “Add/Edit Bibliography” in the Zotero tab and a list consisting of the references used in the document is inserted according to the style you have selected.
If you want to edit your citations or the bibliography, it is strongly recommended that you do not manually change, e.g. change letters or manually delete something. This can cause problems with the field codes and cause other errors.
Instead, choose the citation or bibliography you want to change, and press "Add/Edit Citation" or "Add/Edit Bibliography". Make your changes in this menu, and press enter again.
There is an option to "Unlink citations" in the menu bar. This removes all field codes and the connection to Zotero, leaving only text. Note! This cannot be undone!
After you have done this, you should no longer change your references with Zotero. If in doubt, it is a good idea to save a copy of your document and then Unlink Citations. After you do this, you can change whatever you want in the text without Zotero being affected.
It can be worthwhile to do this as the very last thing you do before you submit a text, because there is a risk that something will go wrong with, for example, the formatting otherwise.
